It can be overwhelming to venture into a new surf break. Here are a couple tips for both beginners and more advanced surfers to choose a new surf spot.
Beginner
Beginning Surfers: Mushy Waves
For true beginners, start with an easy, small, whitewater wave to get the hang of catching the wave/standing up. Then, as you progress you can move to more highly populated spots. Not only is it safer for you, but it is safer for everyone else in the water. Be sure to check the forecast to make sure the break will be small the time you plan on going.

Beginning Surfers: Space
You don't want to be the only one in the water but you don't want to spend all day paddling around a bunch of wave hogs. It is not necessary to go at the peak times to get good waves. This will allow you to try different types of waves and practice your technique without getting in the way.
Beginning Surfers: Find a Friend
Find someone who is better than you to talk to about surfing or to watch while you are in the water. They can give you pointers on certain breaks, how to maneuver, or where to be to catch the wave. They may be able to introduce you to some of the locals and they will ease up on you a bit and let you catch a few waves at "the" spot.
Advanced
For more advanced surfers, some of the larger waves may look too unforgiving. Or, you may not be able to get out past the beach break to the larger surf you want to try.
Advanced Surfer: Time
That break you have been looking at may be a bit unforgiving. But, spend some time to learn where the waves break, find the tempo of the sets. Paddle out when it is not peak of the crowds or wave size.
Advanced Surfer: VIP List
The locals can be as brutal as the waves at some locations. Make some conversation with some people that have come to check out the waves. They may frequent the spot and could help you get on the VIP list with the locals. Surfing is like the mafia, you have to be brought "in" by someone who is already "in".
Advanced Surfer: Line It Up
Every break is different. Get a feel for how people are catching waves; how is the line up moving? Is it a reef break with consistent waves that people take turns on or do they come in sets? Look to see if there are multiple take-off zones or double-peak waves. This will allow you to get a feel for the spot, enjoy your session without upsetting everyone else.

Over the years we have learned there are a few items we don't forget when packing for surf or dive trips. Here are our favorites:
Aquapac Whanganui Case
|
Big enough to fit cell phones, passports, wallets, rental car keys, and digital cameras all in one waterproof pack. Gives you peace of mind if you're caught in a rainstorm or riding on a boat. |
 |
Put it in your checked baggage and you will have every tool you could possibly need while traveling. Open a bottle, cut off a broken zipper...always useful especially the more remote you travel. |
iMainGo2 Portable iPod/iPhone/MP3 Speaker
|
This speaker doubles as an alarm too. Even without electricity, it's nice to listen to tunes at the beach and the iMainGo2 has Bose quality sound. This super lightweight, durable, water resistant speaker protects your ipod/iphone/MP3 player. |
Watermans SPF 55 Sunscreen Lotion
|
Travel tested many times. This sunscreen works in sun, sand, and snow. The compact bottle packs a lot of coverage and does not leak in under pressure. You only have to apply once for all day, non-greasy sun protection. A staff favorite. |
Curve Surf Overstayer Multibag
|
After many damaged boards courtesy of the airlines we love the Curve Surf Overstayer Multibag. It is amazingly lightweight but super durable. You can sinch down the compression straps to accomodate any type of board and it will hold 1-3 boards. It has a dry-pocket to pack clothes too. |

Look for Eco-Friendly L*Space suits for 2010 - Coming Soon!
With the recent green movement, more and more companies are producing eco-friendly products.
The latest company to introduce an eco-line is L*Space. Monica Wise, the swimwear designer for L*Space, decided to test out the new concept with an already popular line of swimsuits, the "Slinky Solids".
The Slinky Solids line, for 2010, will be made with Sorona. Sorona is a product from DuPont, and is made with agricultural feedstock instead of petrochemicals. By eliminating petrochemicals, the dependency on oil is reduced. 37% of the Sorona fiber comes from renewably sourced ingredients, and is made from naturally occuring starch in corn kernels. The production of Sorona also uses less energy and produces less greenhouse gases.
The swimsuit itself is said to be super soft, and wrinkle resistant. If the Slinky Solid line gets a lot of attention, L*Space plans to expand their eco traits to the rest of their swimsuit lines.
The line will make it's fashion debut this summer, at the Miami Swim Show, in Miami, FL.
But if you can't wait... Check out the 2009 L*Space swimsuit line on RazorReef.com!
