School is out and children all over the coast are learning how to catch the waves that summer has to offer.  Beaches such as Waikiki, Hawaii; Cocoa Beach, Florida; Virginia Beach, Virginia; and San Onofre, California have all become popular spots for families to take their kids out for beginner surfing sessions. To make this easier RazorReef.com recommends the following gear and training/educational materials.

Before any child goes out and attempts the sport of surfing, it is very important to be sure that they are comfortable in the water, a strong swimmer, and are able to hold their breathe when necessary. Late morning before the swells begin to die out and it becomes too hot is around the best time of day for parents to take their children out.

Small rolling waves, are typically the best waves to look out for when first teaching children.  BZ 5ft 2in Fishboard is lightweight and rigid and a great board for beginners and children or just having fun.

Parents should also be sure that their child has the proper attire before going out into the water.  Rashguards are tops used to prevent from irritating skin, they are often UV protective and can keep one warmer during cooler temperatures.

Boardshorts and wetsuits are common clothing used by all surfers young and old.  Body Glove and West are a few durable brands that provide protection against cold water and any rocks that may scrape or harm the skin.  Booties are a form of footwear commonly used for preventing injury by stepping on rocks or other sharp objects found in the water.

 To ensure a child is safe and prepared to learn how to surf the proper precautions and wearing the proper equipment is key in learning how to surf.  DVD's and books can also be found on the history and art of surfing as a sport, as well as on learning basic surfing techiniques as well as  that can provide any child or beginner with the right steps in creating an enjoyable time out in the water.
